Background & Education

Karen “Dr. Kay” Traylor-Adolph is a “Jersey Girl” from Newark, New Jersey. She earned a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in African American Studies at Duke University. She obtained an M.S. in Professional Counseling at Georgia State University. Finally, Dr. Kay completed the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with a minor in Multicultural Psychology and Education at the University of Missouri.


Training Experiences

With a heart for community, Dr. Kay engaged in inner-city, youth drug and violence prevention research at Duke University, Emory University and Morehouse School of Medicine. She completed master’s-level training in Georgia at Clayton Center Child & Adolescent Services, along with Teens at Work. Her pre-doctoral training in her hometown at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care at Newark (Formerly UMDNJ) involved child and adolescent intensive outpatient services, a juvenile detention center, and psychiatric emergency room services.

Clinical Experiences & Research Interests

Since 2000, Dr. Kay’s clinical experiences have included community mental health, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita crisis counseling, and general psychological and educational assessments. Dr. Kay’s strengths-based, research on “grandfamilies” entrenched her within the community of grandparents and other loved ones raising children. This involved co-leading a grandfamilies support group and coordinating the statewide Missouri GRANDFamily Coalition.

Credentials & Calling

Dr. Kay is licensed in Georgia as a Psychologist and Licensed Professional Counselor. She has interjurisdictional authority to practice in PSYPACT states. Her targeted experiences have centered on youth with oppositional, attention-deficit/ hyper-impulsive, depressive, anxious and adjustment challenges. Outside of therapy and assessments, Dr. Kay enjoys offering educational and inspirational talks in the community.
